Beautifully executed print of a Walter Gotschke painting showing Hermann Lang in hot pursuit of his competition during the 1939 French Grand Prix. The new bodywork on the updated W 154 presaged the look of the post-WWII Grand Prix cars. (Please pardon any appearance of bowing — this is a photographic artifact. Print is straight and square.)
ABOUT THE PRINT
This painting ranks among those that German artist Walter Gotschke considered his best work on one of his most-studied subjects: the Mercedes-Benz racing car in action. Gotschke's impressionistic gouaches were painstakingly researched and rendered to portray the true character of the car and the racing style and personality of each racing driver in dramatic racing situations. Gotschke's first race sketches were published in 1929 when he was seventeen years old, and he continued to paint thrilling automobile races scenes into his 70s.
This print is beautifully rendered on a substantial matte white stock. Would look striking framed.
Entire piece measures approximately 12 x 16" (31 x 41cm); print area measures 8 x 11 1/2" (20 x 30cm).
