Description
This banner commemorates the 1964 Sebring 12 Hours GT Division III class victory by the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe.
Racing for the
Alan Mann Racing team,
this "Ford/S
helby supported" Daytona Coupe was driven by Bob Holbert and Dave MacDonald. This turned out to be one of Dave
MacDonald's
last great victories before being
tragically killed at Indianapolis that same year.
The Daytona Coupe had a terrific first year in competition and missed taking the
manufacturers c
hampionship
by 6 points! Rumors still swirl today about how the last race of 1964 was cancelled at the request of Enzo Ferrari to seal the championship for Ferrari. That race was to be held at Monza in Italy where Enzo held sway. Ultimately the Daytona Coupe would not be denied when in 1965 it
achieved what was considered unthinkable at that time.
It took the 1965 GT Manufacturers championship by a wide margin thanks to a group of "hot-rodder" engineers and an array of American and European drivers. At the end of the 1965 race season, the Daytona Coupes were unceremoniously abandoned by Ford/Shelby to make way for the as-yet unsuccessful Ford GT40 race program. Ultimately the cars made there way back to the US only after the Alan Mann Racing team in England threatened to "push them into the river."
This banner contains a detailed illustration of the as-raced Daytona Coupe. This includes race accurate wheels, car number, sponsorship markings and viking blue car color.
