Description
West Virginia Fairfax DiamondsThese are not actual diamonds but quartz crystals discovered within a prehistoric petrified tree stump near the Fairfax Stone in Tucker County, West Virginia. They are similar to the famous Herkimer Diamonds (also quartz) of New York. The geologic setting of the Fairfax Diamonds is the Conemaugh Series, Pennsylvanian Age at about 300 million years.
One of the photos shows a small section of the fossil tree stump where the Fairfax diamonds were found.
Many of the diamonds are clear while others are black. The black diamonds contain carbon impurities. The crystals range in size from 1mm to 3mm. They are displayed in a fine 1.5 inch glass vial with cork stopper topped with West Virginia Blue & Gold thread. There are dozens of "diamonds" in each vial. Makes a great West Virginia gift.
