Dangers of intermittent fasting as study finds ‘concerning’ results

With summer just around the corner, many people will be trying to slim down to get that “beach body”. One increasinly popular dieting technique is intermittent fasting.
Essentially it works by extending the preiod when your body has burned through calories you consumed during you last meal. Meaning you should begin to “burn” fat.
This means you will be going longer between meal times so you can burn calories without needing to consume any.
However, it seems it’s not all good news as the American Heart Association has warned that this dieting approach could pose a “serious health risk”.

A study reported by USA Today found that adults who restrict their eating to an eight-hour window have a 91% higher chance of dying from heart disease compared to those who eat within a typical 12-16 hour day.
Victor Wenze Zhong, the senior author of the study, emphasised that these findings are still in the early stages.
He said: “Although the study identified an association between an eight-hour eating window and cardiovascular death, this does not mean that time-restricted eating caused cardiovascular death.”
So, if you’re considering starting a fitness or weight loss journey, it might be worth keeping this information in mind. More research is needed, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry, reports the Irish Star.
